Abstract

Objective: Determine the association between occupational exposure and time to pregnancy (TTP) in a group of female dentists.

Materials and Methods: A retrospective cohort design was employed with a sample of 1,200 Mexican women: 600 dentists and 600 teachers. Data were collected via a structured questionnaire that included reproductive history, occupational exposure and personal habits. TTP was analysed using survival-analysis techniques and Cox proportional-hazards models.

Results: Female dentists exhibited a mean TTP of 4,3 months, significantly longer than the teachers’ mean of 2,3 months (p < 0,001). Significant associations were identified between prolonged TTP and factors such as irregular menstruation, exposure to X-rays and tobacco use.

Conclusions. These findings support the use of TTP as a sensitive indicator of reproductive health in occupational settings and suggest its incorporation into occupational-health surveillance programmes.
