Published three times a year, Horizonte Sanitario is the scientific journal of the Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco. It publishes original scientific research articles and editorials, among other documents, in English, Portuguese and Spanish on subjects related to Public Health and Health Administration.

"Horizonte Sanitario" is included in the Classification System for Mexican Journals by the National Council of Sciences and Technology in the area of Medicine and Health Sciences. It is currently indexed in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO Citation Index), in the Scientific Information System (Redalyc). and the catalog of the Regional Online Information System for Scientific Journals of Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal (Latindex). It is also found in the open information system of journals published in Spanish (Dialnet), in the Ibero-American Network of Innovation and Scientific Knowledge (REDIB), in the Open Academic Journals Index (OAJI), in the Index of Latin American Journals in Science of the General Directorate of Libraries of the National University of Mexico (Periodica), in Latin American Bibliography (Biblat), in the International Index (Actualidad Iberoamericana), as well as the Information Matrix for the Analysis of Magazines (MIAR), in the Virtual Library of Health (bvs), in Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), and in the Geneva Foundation for Medical Education and Research (GFMER). Historical Background
Horizonte Sanitario was first published in 2002 as the scientific dissemination organ of the Academic Division of Health Sciences (DACS) at the Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco (UJAT) under the leadership of Mtra. Asunción Ramírez Frías who served as director of the DACS (1998-2006). The journal’s day-to-day operations were conducted by Dr. Heberto Romeo Priego Álvarez, research professor who also proposed the name of the publication.
The National Copyright Institute granted the title reservation certificate with the number 04-2002-072417052400-102 on July 24, 2002. The journal obtained the ISSN for the printed version with numbers 1662. – 3262 on on August 12, 2002.. On September 15, 2003, the Qualifying Commission for Illustrated Publications and Magazines of the [Mexican] Ministry of the Interior completed revieweing the journal’s documents and concluded it met the criteria for a scientific journal based on the Regulations for Illustrated Publications and Magazines. On November 10, 2010, in a official letter DGCSP/03/367/DG/2003 Subsequent to this federal government’s review, the Federal Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks [Institutional Review Boards]determined that "in general terms [the Journal Horizonte Sanitario] meets the necessary requirements in terms of diagnosis, prevention and rehabilitation of diseases that allow its dissemination" issued On October 22, 2003, the Certificate of Legality of Content number 10206 was granted and Dr. Heberto Priego, Doctor of Health Sciences became the founding editor of the Journal Horizonte Sanitario.
Since its inception, Horizonte Sanitario has been available in electronic format on the website of the Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco(UJAT) by the Computing Center and has been a pioneer magazine in the institution. Currently the journal can be found at https://revistahorizonte.ujat.mx/ Along with other journals published by the UJAT. ring its first few years, the journal was distributed in its printed format by mail to all universities and research centers in the area of medicine and health science in Mexico. This distribution took place under postal registration of periodic publication PP27-0004 authorized by the Mexican Postal Service (SEPOMEX) since January 20, 2004.
On June 16, 2005, the journal became registered in the Regional Online Information System for Scientific Journals of Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal (Latindex) with folio number 14071.
On October 21, 2010, the Qualifying Commission for Illustrated Publications and Magazines notified that the printed medium adheres to the applicable provisions established in the General Health Law and the Regulations of the General Health Law in Advertising Matters.
The creation of the Division of for Research, Postgraduate and UJAT links created a new organizational structure for periodic publications. On December 2, 2011, the Journal Horizonte Sanitario transferred its publication process to the Open Journal Systems (OJS).
On November 3, 2014, Horizonte Sanitario received the ISSN electronic version (internet web) number 2007-7459 from the Mexico National Center for ISSN. On November 4, 2014, Horizonte Sanitario was accepted for inclusion in the Periodic database of the General Directorate of Libraries of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and in the Latin American bibliography in Scientific and Social Research journals (Biblat). On November 4, 2015, Horizonte Sanitario became indexed in the international index Actualidad Iberoamericana. On November 24, 2015, it was added to the Open Academic Journal Index (Oaji). In 2016, Horizonte Sanitario entered the Network of Scientific Journals of America. Latin America and the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal (Redalyc). In January 2017, the journal started being indexed in the Scientific Electronic Library online (Scielo).
On August 24, 2017, the registration of Right of exclusive use no. 04-2013-070514594500-203 in its electronic version, and the journal is included in the database Library and Information Technology Service of the University of La Rioja (Dialnet), Information Matrix for the Analysis of Journals (MIAR) and Red Iberoamericana of Innovation and Scientific Knowledge (REDIB). Horizonte Sanitario is also indexed by LILACS under folio number 763.
Horizonte Sanitario was classified in 2019 as a journal of international quality in the area of Medicine and Health Sciences by the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT) as a journal of international quality in the area of Medicine and Health Sciences.
In 2021, Horizonte Santiario joined the (AURA), which is the space from which AmeliCA intends to reflect the general state of the journals regarding the opening policies and exploitation rights of the scientific publication. In that same year, the journal was incorporated into the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
As of May 2023, it is the Secretary of Research, Postgraduate and Liaison of the Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco that directly assumes its editorial process.
