Objective: To determine the professional factors related to the axiological practice of care in nursing staff of a tertiary public health institution in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Materials and methods: Quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional and correlational study. A census call was made to 302 nursing professionals from a public tertiary institution in Guayaquil; 206 agreed to participate and completed the structured questionnaire of 22 items. The content validity was carried out through the judgment of three experts and the pilot test presented a Cronbach's alpha of 0.80. The study was approved by the ethics committee of the University of Guayaquil, and the participants were asked for informed consent. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 27 and Spearman's Rho coefficient was used.
Results: In the professional factors, mastery of techniques and procedures (87.4%) and work responsibility (82%) predominated. Compliance with protocols presented a higher proportion of response "sometimes" (53.4%). In axiological practice, high empathy stood out (81.6%); while in situations of work pressure, (63.1%) repeated "sometimes". A positive and statistically significant correlation was found between professional factors and the axiological practice of care (p=0.339; p<0.001).
Conclusion: There is a direct relationship between professional competencies and the axiological practice of care. Strengthening professional development, continuous updating and the conditions of the work environment is essential to consolidate ethical, coherent and humanized nursing care.
