Abstract

Objective: To determine the relationship between sexual and reproductive empowerment, knowledge of sexual rights and safe sexual behavior in young Mexicans.

Materials and methods: The study was descriptive, correlational and cross-sectional. The sample consisted of 111 young people from Chihuahua, Mexico, who were selected at convenience. The information was collected through an online survey.

Results: A significant difference in sexual and reproductive empowerment was found between men and women (p < 0.001), with men presenting higher scores (Mdn= 92.39) compared to women (Mdn= 79.34). No relationship was found between sexual and reproductive empowerment, knowledge about sexual rights and safe sexual behavior of these young people.

Conclusion: The young people presented a high level of knowledge about sexual rights. In relation to sexual and reproductive empowerment, males presented higher scores than females. Safe sexual behavior was lower than in other studies in similar populations. In addition, no relationship was found between sexual and reproductive empowerment and knowledge of sexual rights and safe sexual behavior in this population, which emphasizes the need to continue studying these variables due to the scarcity of studies in this population.

Carolina Valdez Montero, Mochis Nursing Faculty, Autonomous University of Sinaloa

Full-Time Professor and Researcher at the Autonomous University of Sinaloa. Pós-Doutoranda, EERP-USP, in the Mental Health department. Doctor in Nursing Sciences (2012-2015) with Magna Cum Laude Mention. Child and Adolescent Sexual Educator. She belongs to the National System of Researchers (Conacyt) Level 1 from 2016 to date. Honorary Member of the Sinaloan System of Researchers. She has participated in the evaluation of quality postgraduate programs (PNPC-Conacyt) and in evaluations of international doctoral scholarships and postdoctoral stays (Conacyt). She has various recognitions, the most recent of which was that she was awarded the Lore de la Vega medal in the science category in the municipality of Ahome and was awarded recognition for Excellence in Research by Sigma Theta Tau.
She has multiple publications of scientific articles in prestigious journals such as JCR and Scopus, in turn she has multiple publications of book chapters and books in recognized publishers and co-editions. At the same time, she has national and state awards for her career in generating research. She directs and collaborates on research projects that have been funded. She participates in research projects at the Mexican Federation of Nursing Faculties and Schools (FEMAFEE). Sandra Paloma Esparaza Dávila, Christus Muguerza School of Nursing, University of Monterrey

Graduate in Nursing, Master in Nursing Sciences and Doctorate in Nursing Sciences from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León. In the bachelor's degree he obtained Academic Merit, and during the doctorate he obtained an honorable mention Cum Laude, he belongs to the National System of Researchers Level I. He is currently a full-time teacher at the Christus Muguerza UDEM nursing school and has the position of Research Coordinator , belongs to the Christus Muguerza Research Committee. She has been the author and collaborator of various research articles in indexed journals and JCR as well as book chapters and participation in national and international research conferences. She is currently a member of the Responsible Sexuality research network.
