Abstract

Objective: To analyze the perception and intention to practice
breastfeeding (BF) in adolescents of both genders who have not yet
been parents.
Material and Methods: This was a qualitative study based on
grounded theory with empirical saturation. Twenty-one semi-structured
interviews were conducted with students between 15 and 18 years of
age in preparatory schools in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico.
Results: Four patterns on the perception and intention of practicing
breastfeeding were identified: traditional; undecided; rejection; and
egalitarian.
Conclusions: The intention to support or practice BF is related to
gender identities and the project of having children and / or a personallabor
development project. There is convergence between different
perceptions and intentions to practice BF in the future, which aims to
review policies in this area.

Philosophy Doctor-Ph.D. by Laval University (Quebec, Canada, 2003); Master in Social Policies from the University of Concepción, Chile (2000); Degree in Social Work from UNAM (1997), Mexico. She is a Full Time and Exclusive Professor at the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) since 2004; attached to the Faculty of Public Health and Nutrition, UANL, since 2005. her line of research is social research in health, highlighting the interest in qualitative methodology, grounded theory, intervention in health and nutrition centered on the person and culture; health policies in the area of nutrition, breastfeeding and the social aspects of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes. She belongs to the National System of Researchers, level I.
María Natividad Ávila Ortiz, Center for Research in Nutrition and Public Health, Faculty of Public Health and Nutrition, Autonomous University of Nuevo León.

Ph.D. in Philosophy with orientation in Social Work and Comparative Social Welfare Policies; Master of Science with orientation in Social Work and Bachelor of Social Work from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León, Mexico. She is a Full Time Professor at UANL since 2010; attached to the Faculty of Public Health and Nutrition UANL since 2012. Her line of research is health and food research with a social approach through qualitative and quantitative methodology and highlights her interest in obesity, body image perception, breastfeeding , diabetes and feeding practices. She belongs to the National System of Researchers, level I.
Adriana Zambrano Moreno, Center for Research in Nutrition and Public Health, Faculty of Public Health and Nutrition, Autonomous University of Nuevo León.

Doctorate in Philosophy with Orientation in Social Work and Comparative Social Welfare Policies (2013), Master's in Public Health (1990) and Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition (1987) from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL), Monterrey, Mexico. Full-time professor since 2000 attached to the Faculty of Public Health and Nutrition UANL since 1989. Her line of research is health, food and nutrition of populations, participation in quantitative and mixed research on food at different stages of life and breastfeeding practices maternal in populations.
